Engineers have started to produce materials for the automotive-construction industry with agricultural waste. Researchers shared with the public the results of the BARBARA Project, designed to create industrial materials from agricultural waste. This project is funded by the European Commission. Additives for biopolymers that can be used instead of plastics are produced from corn starch, pomegranate peel, lemon peel, almond shells.

Agricultural Waste Can Be Used Instead of Plastics
Engineers have developed new materials that can be used to replace existing plastics. These materials consist of pomegranate and lemon pigments, lemon flavors, almond shells and pomegranate biomordants. The agricultural wastes we mentioned are very suitable for 3D printing.
Participants for the BARBARA Project, created with agricultural waste, designed the door moldings of cars with biopolymers made from waste. In addition, forms were printed for the front panel prototype of cars and the connection of beams in the construction industry.
Important results were reached in the research. It was found that it has better aesthetic, thermal and mechanical properties than plastics. Waste can be used to add both aroma and color to the traditional properties of materials.
Experts say that the BARBARA Project will solve two important problems at the same time. The first problem to be solved is that agricultural waste can be reused. The second solution is that the amount of plastic waste will be reduced.
