Brooklyn-based tech startup Amogy Inc. is retrofitting a tugboat to run on an ammonia-to-power system. And it plans to introduce the vessel in late 2023. Amogy is using a tugboat originally built in 1957 for the project. The tug will be powered using diesel generators and electric motors. It will thus be equipped with the company's 1 megawatt ammonia power system.

Other partners collaborating on the project include Seam, Amogy's electrical systems integrator; C-Job Naval Architects, the independent ship design company integrating the ammonia system; and Feeney Shipyard, which will supply Amogy's tugboat and perform engine and retrofit work. Lifting operations and other processes will be carried out under the supervision of C-Job Naval Architects.
Amogy is working with Unique Technical Solutions (UTS), an electrical and systems integrator from previous introductions, to scale its electrical and systems business. To date, Amogy has raised $70 million in funding from strategic investors including Amazon, Saudi Aramco, SK Innovation, AP Ventures and DCVC.
