Instagram's founders are back with a new app called Artifact, long after they left the company, according to a New York (CNN) report. On Tuesday, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger announced the launch of Artifact, which promises a "personalized news feed" powered by artificial intelligence.
In an Instagram post, Krieger noted that he and Systrom had been "working with a talented team" for more than a year to launch the service. "We're slowly letting people in as we grow." Krieger wrote. A waiting list to join also went public on Tuesday. So let's read on for more details about Artifact.

Artifact, an Artificial Intelligence Supported News App Introduced
Unlike Instagram, the app focuses on articles rather than photos. According to Platformer, which first reported the launch, Artifact will recommend content based on interests and allow discussion with friends. A master feed will show popular articles from major media outlets to small bloggers, and a user's feed will become more personalized based on what they click on.
It should be noted, however, that Artifact did not respond to CNN's request for comment with further details. The launch comes at a time of renewed activity in the social media world. After confusion and uncertainty under Twitter's new owner Elon Musk, a number of new services that help users get news and personal updates in a stream have gained traction. Meanwhile, TikTok's rapid rise continues to force numerous apps, including Instagram, to copy its features.
After launching Instagram together in 2010, Systrom and Krieger sold the app to Meta in 2012 for $1 billion. The duo left Instagram in 2018. According to Platformer, Systrom and Krieger have since created a startup focused on the social apps of the future. Artifact is the first product of this startup.
Social networks like Facebook and Twitter have already embraced the use of AI to suggest posts, photos and videos to users. So it's worth noting that Artifact will need to prove that the new app is something different.
