Inflection AI, the artificial intelligence startup of DeepMind founder Mustafa Suleyman, has received an investment of 1.3 billion dollars. Microsoft, Reid Hoffman, Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt and Nvidia participated in the investment round. Microsoft, Nvidia and three of tech's most influential billionaires led the investment in the Palo Alto-based startup, which launched in early 2022. LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt personally invested, with Nvidia being the only new investor.

There is no breakdown of how much of the $1.3 billion raised included cash equivalents (such as computer loans). But a "very, very large chunk" was said to be in dollars. "We have all the money we need to operate and operate," the company said. Inflection also declined to comment on how much of a stake Microsoft and Nvidia currently have in the business. However, Mustafa Suleyman noted that neither company has any ownership-like control or other preferential rights. There is no intellectual property movement and on the commercial front we are still completely independent and free to do what we want and partner with who we want. So there are no real restrictions, he said.
According to the information, the investment round significantly deepens AI startup Inflection's ties with Microsoft and Nvidia, two key partners in the AI race. Microsoft, which is also a major investor in OpenAI, is Inflection's cloud computing partner. Nvidia, meanwhile, is working closely with Inflection on deploying its flagship H100 graphics processing unit (GPU), the current gold standard for AI training, and powering major language models such as OpenAI's GPT-3. Nvidia worked closely with Inflection and its service provider CoreWeave to co-develop Inflection's existing H100 cluster. Inflection also paused its own work to run a recent test that Nvidia announced this week, according to the report. Furthermore, the current AI model broke records in eight tests of the training tests. It also completed a benchmark based on GPT-3 in less than 11 minutes.
