Until now, there was a sharp distinction between smartphones and satellite phones. If you wanted satellite communication, you had to get a satellite phone. Especially with 5G technology, this distinction started to blur. At this point, MediaTEk comes to the forefront with an important market move.

MediaTek Satellite Attack
The satellite-based messaging technology, which comes to the fore with iPhone 14 but is also offered by Huawei, is provided over a band called n53 for 5G connections. Thus, access to satellites is possible in this way. MediaTek, the leader of the mobile chip market, is also working on satellite-based communication. Partnering with the British Bullitt Group, the brand is looking to release a smartphone that supports satellite-based communication in the first quarter of next year at the latest.
MediaTek will use the more efficient 3GPP NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) modem. The modem will also be supported with the necessary software and service components. The company states that it will connect to the satellite in just 10 seconds and there will be two-way communication. So it will be possible to send and receive messages. This service will be offered free of charge for the first year, after which a subscription will be required.
