NIO Unveils New Charging Station with Up to 500kW Power
NIO unveiled its 3rd generation station that enables high-speed battery exchange on the launch day. The station can store up to 21 batteries. In addition to the signature station, NIO also unveiled a charging station that can perform 408 charges per day and has a power of up to 500kW. With the new charging station, especially different branded vehicles can be charged faster. The company's previous station, the 2nd generation platform, provided 120 charges per day.
NIO announced that the ultra-fast charging station is open to all electric vehicle brands and can provide 600A charging current. If the vehicle is installed on an 800V platform, it can charge up to 80 percent in a very short time like 12 minutes. For 400V models, a time of 20 minutes is specified. With this incredible time, NIO even surpasses the charging time of smartphones. The company equipped the fast charger with a 15.6-inch screen and its own liquid cooling technology, providing a lighter cable for easy one-handed use.
None of NIO's vehicles support the 800V architecture, but the company has announced plans to produce an 800V battery pack in 2024. The NIO 3rd generation charger is the highest-powered charger announced by a Chinese electric vehicle company after Chinese rival XPeng developed a 480kW charger. The company has 1,285 stations in China and nine in Europe. By the end of 2023, NIO plans to increase these numbers.
At the launch event, William Li, founder, president and CEO of the company, stated that NIO's charging network is open to all vehicle brands and that about 80 percent of the power provided is used by 110 different electric vehicle brands. Today, NIO vehicles use 19.5 percent of the charging network power, BYD vehicles 20.4 percent, XPeng 3.4 percent and Tesla 12 percent.
