The New York Times announced Digits, a new math-based puzzle game. In Digits, you are given six numbers that you can add, subtract, multiply or divide to reach a target number. You are not limited to just these six numbers. For example, you can multiply two numbers by each other and then add that sum to one of the others. If you reach the exact target number, you get three stars. But if you get close, you get one or two stars.

An NYT article about Digits says that the game "will be available for a limited-time beta this week." The results of the beta will determine whether Digits becomes a full-fledged NYT game. According to the article, "If the response to the game is not what the team had hoped for, the [NYT's green light] committee must decide whether further adjustments would be useful or whether the game's development should end."
When asked if Digits will require a subscription to play if it becomes a full-fledged NYT game, here's the response from NYT spokesperson Jordan Cohen "While we haven't made any long-term decisions about Digits, I'm excited to learn and hear from players about their experiences." So the game is now free-to-play in beta for a limited time.
