Özgür Demirtaş was born on August 12, 1976 in Ankara. He received his primary education in Salihli, Manisa. He lived in İzmir during his secondary and high school education. Demirtaş was a very bright student throughout his education life. His success continued after high school. He proved his academic success by being in the top 50 in the university exam in Turkey.
Demirtaş continued his education in electrical and electronic engineering at Boğaziçi University. After completing his undergraduate education, he skipped his master's degree and received acceptance from Boston College for his doctorate. He graduated from Boston College, which he entered in 1998, with the title of doctor in 2003. In the same years, he continued his academic career as an assistant professor at New York City College Baruch College. At the age of 31, he had the title of Tenure.
He taught at the Stern School of Business at New York University. His academic work attracted attention from many circles. Some of these have been published in the world's best-known academic journals. Among these journals were journals such as Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Monetary Economics, and Journal of Financial Economics.
By 2012, Demirtaş decided to relinquish his tenure title. After this decision, he started his duty as the Chair of Finance at Sabancı University.

In addition, it provides consultancy services to many holdings.
