With increased access to content and the growing influence of social media going nowhere and becoming second nature to the digital native generation, the need to police content has increased. Content consumption can be wonderful: it can educate, inspire and inform. On the other hand, it can be harmful and unsafe, especially for young people on social media. An estimated 4 billion social media users worldwide upload more than 80 years of new footage every day to different platforms, from Instagram to Tiktok, Reddit to YouTube. And the content moderation problem continues to grow. The market is expected to reach $32 billion by 2031.
Sasha Haco and James Thewlis teamed up in Entrepreneur First's accelerator program and developed a solution to automate content moderation. The duo secured a new investment of 7.4 million euros ($8 million) to scale. The investment was led by strategic angels such as Plural's Ian Hogarth and board member Carolyn Everson. Unitary's AI-based technology can analyze the content of user-generated videos. This allows it to identify videos that may not be suitable for certain users, platforms or advertisers. For example, it can tell the difference between a video containing hate speech and an informative documentary on hate, even without the intervention of a human critic. The technology can dynamically scale on demand and can process 25,000 video frames per second.
Tools like Detoxify aim to create a safer environment among users on social media and other online platforms. Wider use of such technologies can help make online interactions more positive and constructive. Unitary aims to use the new investment to further develop its technology to reach more users and contribute to the wider adoption of such technologies.
