The Startup Accelerates Synthetic Bio-Solutions
Cradle, a biotechnology software startup based in Delft, the Netherlands, is using specialised software to help biologists design advanced proteins. This enables faster and easier development of synthetic biosolutions, greatly improving the process of bringing solutions for human and planetary health to market. All these processes often take a long time and involve huge costs. This is where Cradle's web-based software comes into play. Cradle's artificial intelligence platform can create molecule sequences that better match researchers' desired properties. This allows scientists to focus on experiments that are more likely to be successful, without having to try everything on their own.
Using AI in a Good Way for Future Generations
Cradle, founded in 2021 by Van Grieken and bioengineer Elise de Reuse, has secured agreements with a number of companies, including Johnson & Johnson among its industry partners, and announced a $24 million Series A financing round. It is currently working on more than 12 R&D projects, including vaccines and antibodies. The team currently consists of 20 people split between Delft, the Netherlands and Zurich, Switzerland. The latest round of financing was led by Index Ventures with participation from Kindred Capital. Angel investors include Chris Gibson, co-founder and CEO of Recursion, and Tom Glocer, former CEO of Thomson Reuters and Lead Director of Merck. The new capital injection will allow Cradle to expand its team, build additional lab and engineering facilities in Amsterdam, continue to develop its platform and user experience, and onboard more customers in line with growing demand.
